ALL OF THE DERP. I was drawing on stream. Here is what I draw when I get tired.
And this is the kind of crappy doodle I throw up when I have to get up for a second. It is possible that I want to be Kate Beaton. (Most of the time the little doodles are of Vic, though.)
Also because I am me, these were preceeded by Gaia doodles. And a random butt.

So I had to do a little TF2 graphic for a Gaia thing. I started with a scanned in drawing inked in sharpie:

Cleaned up the lines and added detail in Photoshop:

And then I brought the lines into Sai and threw some color onto it.

Also I did this on stream so I wound up doodling some people as well, in Sai.

Next time I will have to space those more evenly. :Uc But this is Ben Templesmith, amazing artist and comicker extraordinaire. I'll probably do more tweaking on this to get it right. It could really use some tentacles.

Also a Plus4 bro has been streaming a lot of werewolf and horror movies the past two nights. It's pretty dang awesome.
These were both done in Sai, I'm making another effort to acclimate myself to the program. Still can't seem to get the pressure sensitivity to work; perhaps if I download the Windows drivers and use it in my cross-platform program?

Today I succumbed to the lure of Leyendecker.
This was copied from one of his paintings, with liberties taken in the facial region so that it could be Vic in the fancy tux. A good exercise to work on my painterliness and use some good brush effects. I might do more of these in the future; if I could grasp the beautiful easy way he paints, I think I'd just about die happy.

I meant to do more drawing last night, but I had a brief period of outright panic as somehow my tablet circumvented something or other, and I was left with a keyboard and trackpad that would not function.

I just got back from airport escapades, so it is time once more for ~POORLY PHOTOGRAPHED PLANE ART!~ Inkwash edition!

This time I brought along a bottle of ink to draw with(which only exploded within its little baggy on the way TO North Carolina, and not back). There was a third prepared, but I erroneously thought we were landing about a half hour before we actually did, and put up the penciled sketch. I'll chuck it up here later on.

I keep seeing these drawings with simple, pastel or bright colors that make a good drawing really pop into something more. So I've messed around with it last night. In order of drawing:

I definitely consider this last one the most successful in terms of color. I think if I get a little more involved with these kinda pieces, or possibly throw some texture into the mix, it'd be something much more... polished, I suppose? Anyhow. Should be seeing more of this later. Also here is the underdrawing of the last one, because I can't decide if maybe I shouldn't have gone more of a charcoal route with it.
It would have benefited from a little more softness, I think.

Oh, and I've been fiddling about with Sculpey again, or there'd be more doodles.
Kait's gotten me interested in ball jointed dolls, but since I am not made of cash and like working with my hands, I've been opting instead to figure out their construction and how the joints all work together. Basically with this project I'm following the scientific principle that you learn the most by fucking up, not by being correct. AND BOY AM I LEARNING A LOT.

More later, and hopefully sooner than the last time. I've been focused on cooking more lately; latkes, risottos, fancy potatoes, zuchinni fry-ups. Definitely the most speedily gratifying of art forms. Nom nom nom.

SO IN NON-DOODLY NEWS, reading an article about the Harlem Renaissance and how gay culture grew and behaved within its confines both helped me make some kind of background of what Chicago gay culture might have been like, but it also hooked me up with some TOTALLY KICKING BLUES MUSIC.

There's the lesbian blues of Ma Rainey, in which she dares people to try and prove that she's been sleeping around with the ladies, which is definitely my favorite of the bunch. And searching for Freakish Man Blues by George Hanna turned up a glorious blog with a wide assortment of old, wonderful blues music. Gladys Bentley was another great discovery from the book; she owned a club in Harlem where she entertained nightly in a tuxedo. One hell of a voice, and she's damned good on the piano.

All in all it has been a very slow, but musical day.

Slow day. This is what I am trying and it is not very effective as of yet.
Sketched a sad scene thing me and Kait were working out but the expression is entirely wrong at this point. Working it all in one layer, trying to figure out a good way to use my underdrawing. I get too much of a disconnect from the loose originals most times.

Rage was had. But I also got one rather neat request that will apparently be used as concept art for a tattoo design. So that was nifty.

Oni has me participating in a DC 30 days meme. First off is to describe your favorite DC character.

This took some thought but there's a recent addition to their company stable that is definitely a favorite, and that is, without a doubt, Will Eisner's The Spirit. Darwyn Cooke revived the series under DC, with a brilliant Batman one-shot and two trades that were a beautiful homage and stayed fresh. The creative teams that came after him were not able (as far as I read before it became unbearably stale) to keep the vital element that keeps Denny Colt, Denny Colt: his charm and humanity.

I love The Spirit for a lot of reasons, a lot of which honestly don't have anything to do with Denny Colt. Will Eisner pioneered narrative styles and story-telling in the comic medium, and used his Spirit series as a chance to stretch these out. Spirit stories could be sci-fi, horror, humor, noir, mystery, romance, spy stories, ANYTHING. And standing in the center of this maelstrom of amazing artistry is an intelligent, hardworking, and distinctly human man who will do anything he can to uphold justice.
Admittedly, one of the most important things for me is that Denny Colt just OOZES charm. He is Cary Grant in printed format- polite, witty, suave as hell and all the women want him- and he pratfalls beautifully. Just like with Cary Grant's background in acrobatics that made him a master of physical comedy, Denny Colt's appeal shines brightest when we find him flustered, shamed, embarassed (or tied to a chair and covered in lipstick marks). It helps that there are plenty of good foils to set him up. They make The Spirit beautifully human, for all of his otherworldly settings.

Anyhow. That's the first bit of the meme. I'll have to do two tommorrow to try and catch up.

So last night I finally went through with the oft pondered notion of shaving my head.

First I had to rid myself of some excess hair.

Aaaaaah, feels so good to have it all off. *rubrubrubrub* Now to break out my straight razor only to find...

I am an atrocious barber.
But with perseverance, a lot more stropping of the straight razor, and one of those fancy double-bladed disposable modern razors...
..great effects can be achieved!
The Mr. Shine Clean seems to be gone in the morning, however. Ah well, can't have everything. I can't wait to have a (hopefully even) head of peach fuzz.

I still draw! Lots, even! Just been forgetting to throw things up on this blog. Been pretty busy actually.

I'm in a bit of a fluff mode and I've been finding it hard to stop drawing Bon and Victor being goddamned adorable. (We've been working on an alternate story of the guys in a modern setting, have we mentioned? Because we are silly, and also sappy as hell.)

Also, there was a thread in the freebie forum that said it was looking for pitches to do three page comic, so that got me thinking and I produced this little scenario. The intended joke falls a little flat, but I still like it.

[A car is sitting outside of a small suburban kind of house in a somewhat decent looking neighborhood; this is in the late 1930s or early 1940s. It is night. The house is the only source of light. in the foreground is the windshield of a car and ]
[Victor and Bon are sitting in the car, watching the house and resting respectively, obviously waiting.]

A: "I hate it when they make you wait out in the goddamn car for an age."

B:"What, like we ain't got nothing else to do but wait for this guy? We have to sit in here stewing until he decides it's time to go?"

C: "Mm." [ Bon is nonplussed, eyes closed, obviously trying to nap while they wait]

D: "S'just goddamned rude is all."

E: "That it is, cher."

F: " Finally." [ We can see someone leaving the house, its occupant waving goodbye.]

G:" Thought I was gonna die of old age before he left." [Vic reaches into his coat and Bon reaches down for something on the floorboard]

[Vic pulls out an automatic revolver and Bon is now holding a tommy gun]
Last panel bubble I forgot to include: "You wanna get some drinks at Muddy's after we waste this guy?" "Love to."

For panel 7 I'm not sure if the light source would go out, like they'd turned off the porch light, or if it'd get a little brighter, from the door being opened. By 9 it'd go back to the previous lighting, or darker.

Might try and make it later, see if I can't get a good streamlined comic process going. It helps that I could totally cheat on the background here. :3c

And then Vic and Bon were fancy British gentlemen. Vic's in uniform, an Officer of the Light Foot apparently.

Winding up with a little set of waist-ups of the boys. Might be using these for a thing on Gaia later.
That's it for now. Probably gonna pop up a commission I've almost finished on here tomorrow.

I figured I would chuck up my commission process, since I finally got one as part of a declaration that I was doing commissions, and not just something a friend asked for.

A gentleman by the name of Midaychi asked me to do a fullbody piece of his character of the same name. Midaychi is a Southern Sergal, a race made up by Mick Trancy. He was extremely helpful in providing me with references, so I had plenty of good source material to draw upon for this piece. I usually do research for visual refs anyhow for this kind of thing; Google Image Search is my copilot. He also provided a character biography, which I LOVE to have; it means I can try and imbue a little personality into my work.

First I did two pages of thumbnails, to get the hang of how Sergals were constructed and determine what I would have the character wearing. I opted to leave out much in the way of clothing, in favor of making the lines of the body clearer.

As you can see I had an idea for a headwrap, but decided it would look better framing his neck. Next I did a few thumbnails to determine what pose I would use in my final draft. After I'd found one I was happy with, I sent it to Midaychi to confirm that this was what he wanted.
Once he'd given his approval, he made the payment and I began working on the final draft. This step was a good formality I'd read about; this way HE knows that I am, in fact, working on his piece, and I know that I'm not going to get burned in terms of payment. Better business and everyone happy on all sides. I won't be able to do this on a sketch piece, since, obviously, the piece itself is a bit sketchy, but that's a bridge I'll cross when I come to it.
After that I pulled out the Bristol board, laid down my pencils, and inked the lines. I'm paranoid, so I scanned the lines in case I blew it during shading.
Then I started in with the inkwash. Lately if I ink I'm using brushes; I used to use dip pens, but the start-stop-refill-repeat process gets annoying quickly. They're still good for very fine lines, though. Here's the final product, a shaded fullbody ink piece, as ordered.
Et voila! Midaychi loved it, and I gave him files of all the work I had put into the piece; it costs me nothing more to do and gives him more flexibility in what he can do with his commission. He says that he'll probably try to get someone to color the un-shaded lines in the future. This was a real pleasure to work on and I'm hoping I get to do it again soon.

Commission: Glam Rock Gorilla

I GOT A COMMISSION OF ALL THINGS. The Dude von Doom gave me this mock-up from something I think is called Hero Generator.

I did a page of sketches first, which I streamed so that he could see how it was developing. There was some discussion over how the guitar should look, and Pablo, another of the creators for this character, eventually came up with the banana side-bit which I quite like.
After that I did a blue-line sketch using one of the poses I'd sketched out, trying to keep it active.
Inks and color followed, and I used a gradient style to shade I'd seen used well before. (All that stream-watching is paying off!)

The background is a combination of textures. This was fun to draw, if a bit time consuming.

AT LAST I PARTAKE IN THE TIME HONORED TRADITION OF THE PANTY SHOT.
Not my neko-catgirl-desu-desu-nyaaaaaaaa~ , the lovely Junk just keeps making characters that GODAMMIT I WANNA DRAW.
Also I am toying with how Bon should look as an older dude. Kinda makin' me think of Willem Dafoe here a little. The tattoos are veve for Dhambala (chest) , Baron Samedi (closer hand), and Papa Legba (half-turned hand) . Bon's big into the voodoo, being a Louisiana boy with some close personal experiences. And I can already tell these tattoos are gonna give me trouble, but they're such a nice touch I don't think I can part with them (or try to convince my co-writer to, more accurately.)

Streamed some ~TRADITIONAL MEDIA~ last night, which was an awkward process of dubious visibility, but the poor suckers who came along for a watch seemed entertained. I'll have to get an honest to god webcam and a better set-up if I want to make that a more regular process at all.

Work in progress. Wrote it as I went, with a brief IM hashed out intro that I need to illustrate. This is why the dialogue sucks and feels clunky. Gonna rewrite a little after some sleep. This was meant to go somewhere frivolous but kinda wandered into dark waters. The curly-haired Cajun belongs to my co-writer Kait.

Edit: Blogger seems to have made it tinier than it is. I have found the image size limit, I see.

I can't stay away from da voodoo. Voudan to be technical. It's such an interesting pantheon and jumbling of colors into something that is just so incredibly VIBRANT. The Ghede alone are awesome and coarse and raucous.

So I spent the past two nights doing some general research and picking and drawing a Loa for Victor. I picked Baron LaCroix, Baron of the Cross, one of the leaders of the Ghede.
Messed around with sketches and finding little details, like sunglasses with one lens popped out, sacred colors, that kinda thing.
Finally grabbed a sketch I liked..
..and digitally inked it (with heavy anatomy tweaking) into this.
A lot of fun and something I'm rather pleased with. I do have some rum. Maybe I should leave a little bit out as a mark of respect.

I WENT TO NEW YORK. I SAW SO MUCH ART AND HEARD SO MUCH GOOD MUSIC.
-but then I was moving around so much that I barely had the time to sit down and draw anything at all. Most of my sketching I got done on the plane, or little figure drawings at the airport. And unfortunately for you, I did it on my handy dandy tiny sketchbook that fits in the backpocket of my jeans, and was never meant for scanning or laying terribly flat.
Anyhow, did some planning for Victor's childhood and development. This is how I hash out most of my ideas.

And some hastily scrawled items from the Met's Arms and Armor exhibition. That is a TIFFANY COLT with LIZARDS ON THE HANDLE. It was so, so pretty. ; w; (And below it is a 16th century German GUNBLADE *cough* I mean hunting knife/pistol. They even engraved a calendar on it. So handy. :B And useless. )

WOO coloring breakthrough. I feel pretty good about this piece. ...in terms of color selection, not... well... hmm. :l

Perhaps I should just slap an adult content notice on this blog. I do have a wealth of pictures that are both sketches and sketchy in nature. I mean this quickly done sketch was the part of a whole series. (All equally fast and bad in terms of anatomy and proportion, but I like to pretend they're very expressive. U: )
Guess the final pic isn't too bad either in terms of naughty bits.

I drew things yesterday yes and some of them were naked people which was AWEOSME. Charcoal, unfortunately, does not scan very well, or at least leaves a scanner very messy. So just have a little thing of my favorite model of the figure drawing session. It's a weekly event so I'll be back for sure.

BUSY NIGHT.
Finally did up a reference for older Victor.
And then I got into this comic RP thing which I am making ridiculous if I can.
Also I drew a friends OCs. ..and a random panty shot. Dammit Japan, you're rubbing off on me. U:< These two guys are this girl's yakuza bodyguard's. Daddy's little heir to the criminal empire or something. It's a fun set up, I'm just explaining it poorly. :U

But yeah. I feel good that I'm actually making backgrounds and made some kind of comic page. PROGRESS, SLOW BUT STEADY. Edit: I was reminded how much I enjoyed this random picture. Did an interaction thread, or tried to anyways. I like how Beau has what is essentially trollface.jpg going on. (Yes I know Jeza is simplified, but gimme some credit, I'd just finished doing something more detailed of her in very little time.)

SO I DRANK A HELL OF A LOT OF RUM LAST NIGHT. Luckily I did it on a full stomach and drank water, so today has not been a litany of pain and stabby light. Anyhow, I was convinced to do a stream and I drew weird things and then chucked up another freebie thread.
Beau is firing a Boy's Anti-Tank rifle, and I'm honestly unsure if he wouldn't just be thrown out of the car by the force. It looks damn cool, though, so.

Figure drawing class last night. Awesome. The guy here, Bobby, is an awesome model and quite an artist in his own right. He pointed me towards a few other places to draw models on my own time, so look forward to seeing more naked people here later. C:

Done in about 25 minutes, ink base and watercolor paint.
Done in about 15 minutes of a 25 minute drawing- the whole pose was nice, but Bobby holding the arm just looked so awesome I wanted to focus on it.

First up, first two sketches of the first principal female character of the upcoming comic. They're terrifically rough, but here they are.

I was given "sexy librarian" look to work off of, and it was deemed essential she have impressive knockers. Need to hash out her fashion better; got another sketch around somewhere of her in a cardigan that looks much better.
Anyhow, also looking like I might be doing a small thing with the Dude von Doom, in support of his Nicky Two Vests story. Either way, I did a quick ink peice of the titular character.
I've done more, but I'm tired, a bit discombobulated, and just too damn lazy to keep scanning.

I HAVE TOTALLY BEEN DRAWING THINGS.

I just forgot to post them. Again.I did two value studies last night, since my value use is weak, which makes my color worse, so I'm.. working up to that stuff. This is Rachel Noel Tyrell's lovely face from the Whitechapel Draw Me thread. (And it seems she liked it, yay!) I think I might have to establish doing one of these a day for a while until it becomes second nature. I think I learned a good deal from these two drawings.

This is a photo-referenced drawing of Jaborwhalky, form Whitechapel's "Draw Me" thread. (God she has the best outfits.) It feels like it needs a caption, but I just couldn't come up with one I liked. Any suggestions?

Been doing a lot of Victor sketches on Gaia too. Here are two:

People seem to like Vic; or maybe they just enjoy seeing a dude that both looks like a dude, and does not look below the age of twenty, despite being centuries old, hurf durf. More Gaia sketchings. Think I have the inks done for the Mook/Roger/Vic space poster from earlier, but I'm gonna wait until I can tweak it later to post.
The tiny legs started as a joke and then just kinda stuck. Strangely endearing.
An OC given the fashion specifications of "neo-victorian with elements of Japanese fashion." I did what I could. Bloomers like that are a feminist invention, so personally I'd ear mark that as part of her personality. This outfit looked a lot better in my head, honestly. :l
More Vic and Beau shenanigans, with my Gaia 'twin' who shares my birthday.
Also no one will stop talking about Pokemon, so then Victor was a pokemon.

Busy busy night of Sketching! Me and Kait ( a Gaia buddy) spent hours talkin' and giggling over what our two characters would do if they met and somehow, somehow possibly became friends.
We are pretty sure this would not be a process without a few, er. Bumps in the road, as it were. C: It was fun aging up Victor and Beau (same guy from a few posts before) is a fun dude to draw. Since he's basically a dick.
Also Kait is quite inspirational when it comes to fleshing out Vic, and gracefully allowing me to gank an idea in regards to prosthetics. Many other things were doodled tonight, mostly of the silly variety, so I won't show them all.
...but I might have to show this one.

So today I signed up for Script Frenzy. The goal is to write 100 pages of script in one month, much like NANOWRIMO is meant to produce a novel in one month.

I am a terrible writer. As proof, here is my planning for one of the possible story lines I will use for this project:

Still, considering making it so that there are also 100 page thumbnails with these script pages. So that at the end of April, I could, theoretically just start drawing and crank this thing out.

...this possibly horrible thing.

Whatever. Practice practice practice is good. Now I'm off to read a huge amount of history so that I can add plausibility to my story.

Right, tried to post this last night but forgot my silly password. SKETCHES. YES I STILL MAKE THEM.

Wound up doing another stream last night to try and get some mental quiet-ude. Started with a big honking pulp-action looking thing. Here's the underdrawing:
Still in-progress; got the inks partly done. I'll post that and the final color later on.
After things died down a bit I fell back on my Gaia standby and headed to the Freebie Forum to draw some OCs. First up is a person with another WW1 veteran character, name of Beau, who seems like an interesting guy. I wound up, completely unintentionally, making him Cary Grant. This makes me wonder if his creator has seen Father Goose.
Cary Grant with Clark Gable ears. Hee. (Those are shoulder holsters, incidentally.) And then since it was only right for old soldiers to get together for a drink, I had to draw this.
In my head they are discussing idiotic officers. And mocking them. Kait (Beau's creator) has dubbed them the "Amputee Alliance", since Beau's missing some fingers and less obviously, part of his leg.
This next one is a werewolf pack leader for someone writing a novel. Which reminds me, I need to get back to them about their first chapter. He's blind in that eye, which I kinda hope is obvious. I have no idea if eye tissue would scar that way; Google turned up no good reference images and I imagine the likelihood of a cutting wound that wouldn't just pop the eye completely might be a little rare. Random wolf-ear implies he's in the process of shifting, thus the black seeping into the green dreads.
And finally to cap the night off, I broke out of my DUDES WITH SCARS mold and tried to go for something delicate and feminine. I'm riffing heavily on the sample posted with the character's explanation, and it was a lovely reference to work from. But goddamn that hair gave me some trouble to emulate.
Right, I'd say that about covers it. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have some honest-to-God paintings done and available for posting here.

So I'm entirely braindead just now, and I did get a little bit done last night/this morning for the pseudo-RP community I'm in. (aka, Drawhore group.)

These I hammer out in thirty minutes tops, usually more along the lines of ten or fifteen minutes. With the story telling method we use, speed becomes kind of essential, and in a back-and-forth exchange the faster you are the longer you can crank out a narrative.

It certainly doesn't make for masterpieces, but it does force you to sketch the gist of a lot of different things.
Probably not going to post anything else today; I have to spend my time today painting and writing, as I'm behind on my school projects.

A friend's Wigglytuff gijinka, aka a humanized version of a pokemon. The idea of pink chest hair was ridiculous and appealing.
Aaaand an angry cabbie character named Wally. Apparently he's a Fight Club character. This is a terribly drawn hat. :B But anyhow.

Oh gosh, it's been days. ;w; How terrible of me. I SWEAR I've been drawing, I just haven't posted much about it, partly because some of what I drew went up on my Deviant Art. I've been doing Gaia commissions as a form of practice, both art-wise, and frankly, commission-wise. I don't quite have the balls to go out and say "HEY THIS IS WHAT I'M WORTH SO YOU MOOKS SHOULD PAY FOR IT" just yet. Bit hit or miss on hammering through things I get artblocked on.

Anyhow, I think this one was my favorite of commissions drawn. I really do have a lot of fun working in black and white.

Birdie birdie birdie. I've been more and more interested in birds lately.
Nothing much else of a serious nature. Trying a 'theme' commission set up on Gaia, basically doing one face and modding it for different avatars. I've seen things like that on FurAffinity that were quite popular. My own avatar's version made as a sample:
(Vic's in a WW1 uniform and I've made it look a bit like he's in a cloud of gas.) Seem to be doing things a little more complex coloring-wise on the commissions. These are kinda fun and definitely silly.
S'pose I'll close out with another WIP. A mopey Victor shot I've been toying with off and on. The story I'm picturing for him is not a happy one, so chances are good I'll be drawing more like this.

Sneaking in a bit over the mark with a WIP and a hasty sketch. Spent all of last night reading a manga called Dorohedoro that is insane and lovely and just goddamn awesome. (So I got no sleep and was too tired to draw anything decent. @w@;; ) Budgie head guy is a dude I've been vaguely toying with for a while and will continue to polish, and the lizard-head dude is one of the main characters from Dorohedoro. Just trying to get a feel for his facial structure.

...so how 'bout them Oscars? :B

This will be a blog to both encourage and catalog my daily sketching. I draw a lot of things that I tend to not post on my art sites, because I don't feel like they're good enough to be part of a 'portfolio.' So to get over and/or compensate for this, I'll be posting one thing every day that I've drawn or, possibly, painted. I would love any and all critique, since the focus of this blog is for me to get better.

Cheating for now with a photo-referenced sketch I drew yesterday, one of my own characters 'cosplaying' as Marv from Sin City. I'll probably post again today with something actually FROM today.
